It's about balance. Splurge on some, save on others.
Some of the tips in that book are a little extreme but I do appreciate the direction. So yes, I will sacrifice a bit now to make sure that I'm comfortable later but I will not subject myself (or my family) to any kind of unnecessary hardship in the name of saving money.
Keep in mind that for a lot of the people in the book, saving is a goal in and of itself. This is very different from making sure that you have enough stored away to take care of you later in life or to help out on a rainy day.
