I have been doing this on my old Acura since 150k and I am at 210k now with no issues. But that car is so simple, it would be stupid not to. Just remove drain plug, wipe clean, reinsert drain plug and the pour 3 quarts in through the dip stick. It only adds 5 minutes to a typical engine oil change. The acura transmission system holds about 9 quarts total, so a few 3 quart changes back to back and then a every other few engine oil changes gets the fluid in good shape and keeps it that way.
To say the least, yes. They have to follow what BMW tells them, just like the timing chain guide issue. If it can be done for preventative maintenance, then I agree it should be done.
