I have a 2013 and would say you probably need to update your drive software through
www.bmw.com/update. I have an iPhone 7+ and it works just fine over Bluetooth for phone or audio and through USB aux port to use apps etc. I typically use Bluetooth though, just more convenient and I don't notice a difference in audio quality.
