From a performance perspective, isn't it better having the front calliper toward the back end of the wheel, i.e. not the leading edge? For better cooling flow to pads etc.
What I have read is that drive shaft layout to the front wheels is what moves the calipers to the leading edge. Between the steering and suspension knuckles combined with drive shafts, not much space is left to have calipers towards the back of the wheels. Packaging gets very tight, and yes having calipers towards the back is better from a braking stand point.
