Sorry, I should have been clearer.

Obviously there will need to be a hardware update to allow for touch, but there shouldn't be any reason that a software update with the updated interface, without touch ability, couldn't be installed.

Unless of course they don't approach it this way and decide that it will only work on the newer touch friendly units. It then becomes a question as to whether or not the new unit can be retrofitted or not.

Personally, I am not interested for the touch/gesture capability, but rather wouldn't want to use an old interface if a new one is made available. It's bound to be refreshed and look quite modern in comparison.
