I'm not familar with the metrics on the E36, but on the E46 the sedan is only stiffer than the coupe because all coupes have folding rear seats. I don't know if the same is true for the E46. Neverthless, it is true that the E46 sedan w/o folidng seats is the stiffest of the E46 non M3 family. However if BMW offered the coupe without folding rear seats, it would be stiffer.
