I'm not disputing the above, but I'll share why I chose a shotgun as my primary home defense long gun... I live in a condominium so I am very concerned about penetration and hitting neighbors. To make things more difficult, my unit faces the courtyard and there's another row of buildings about 50 yards away. I even modified my Benelli so the semiautomatic action cycles lighter loads reliably for this reason.
