I think they'll save the AWD for the bigger cars that have issues with traction due to bigger power (i.e. M5 & M6)
And I'll counter with Audi's RS3 and Mercedes-AMG's CLA45 which are the competition that a few people are overlooking. Don't think BMW wants to bag the competition with an AWD equivalent car? Think again.

And the M2 xDrive will be naturally RWD biased, a win/win configuration for those who need and/or prefer awd.
