I wouldn't read into it too much until something like that is confirmed.

The 2 series is a low runner on BMW's sales ladder - selling only tens of thousands of units.

The M2 will be a tiny niche of the 2 series sales, which even if very successful, will likely still only sell thousands of units.

To make an Xdrive variant will still require the huge amounts of regulatory testing and certification to make it road legal, so even though the engineering could be done with the existing parts bin, to make money back on the regulatory makes for a small business case.

So again, nothing makes it impossible, but I would expect them to see how many M2's start to move before considering offering an AWD version, and I have to imagine that probability is fairly low - but that's based only on statistics, not insider information.
