I agree it sounds ridiculous, but one of the first things I checked was backdrive of the actuator system…about 9Nm breakaway and 1.3Nm running load. Also the schematic in the BMW ETM only shows ground on the brown wire circuit. Taking motor apart it is truly a brush DC motor. The more I dig into this, the simpler it looks. I think the most difficult part will be getting a corresponding PWM duty cycle to match up with a given lockup percentage. At the very least, I might only use PWM to modulate/transition between 0% and 100% lockup when needed.
