Key is to use it frequently. If you let the car go awhile before washing and the dust gets built up, it won't work well without brushing.

Power washer also helps.

Agree that coating the wheels (cquartz, optician, etc) is a good move. Look to see if you can find a detailer who will pull the wheels and really coat it well. That should eliminate the "behind the spoke" issue.
Good advise. Sounds like brake dust unless you go CC will be an issue. Precoating makes lots of sense along with frequent power washing the rims, I do a wash every 2 wks(unless more needed) so this should be enough to keep me happy.
