Griot's Garage Heavy Duty Wheel Cleaner is 95% as good as Sonax, costs much less, and can be found in local auto parts stores.
Key is to use it frequently. If you let the car go awhile before washing and the dust gets built up, it won't work well without brushing.
Power washer also helps.
Agree that coating the wheels (cquartz, optician, etc) is a good move. Look to see if you can find a detailer who will pull the wheels and really coat it well. That should eliminate the "behind the spoke" issue.
