They are doing it to cover their bases. They already have a 1 Series Sedan, so with the addition of a 2 Series GC they can appeal to whatever the tastes are in a given market. There is also the 2 GT/AT, although those currently have an MPV-like form factor rather than the more car-like 3GT (soon to be 4GT) and 6GT of their big brothers. Obviously coupe-like sedans and hatchbacks are growing in popularity as you point out, but whether the traditional three box sedan will disappear completely remains to be seen.
