Absolutely true - all the old 2002 and e30 owners cried fowl at the size of the e46. Now it's seen as the last of the small 3 series, but it wasn't at the time.
There was a cartoon doing the rounds on the net back then portraying the e21 as a young, thin Elvis, the e30 as Elvis at his peak, the e36 with Elvis in a 70's onesie, and then ending with an e46 as fat Elvis
Just had a quick dig on google to see if I could find it, but it didn't show up in an image search. Still, with the size of "small" cars now, my e92 is even starting to look small!
