Newer cars (2014?) you can update over the air from the idrive.
Older cars download onto a USB then plug in.
For SMS, make sure you have enhanced Bluetooth coded (if not ordered) and messages are in the office function. If using an iPhone you need to enable notifications from the phone's Bluetooth option menu once connected.
