been thinking about the IS 500 lately, but the lag on the paddle shifters looks bad from every review I have seen...

I love manual so I need at least responsive paddles.

are the paddles on the IS pretty laggy as compared to a BMW zf8?
I'd say there's about 1/4 second delay in the paddles, which, in my experience, is no worse than the ZF in our 330i was. In the IS 500, the shifts are much quicker and snappier than they were in my IS 350, so it's night-and-day improvement compared to that. I'd say the only downside is you have to pull the paddle a few hundred RPM before redline if you want to not smack the rev limiter. Like, when the needle reaches about 6500 - 6800 RPM, if you pull the paddle, it shouldn't hit the rev limiter.

The downshifts are AWESOME though. They happen right away when pulling the paddle. Worth it, IMO.
