Above all else never trust your brake wear gauge or the dealer to decide when the brakes need replacing. The gauge often gets miscalibrated (and will need a software reset), and the dealer will want to replace brakes even when there's lots of wear (say 25%) left on them.

It's not even really a gauge, it's a calculated value based on a number of figures. Only the "Your brakes are shot" light means you need to replace your pads because the wear sensor wire was worn through - triggering the light. (at that point check for rotor run-out as well)
