that when you look at the 11th digit is an F which indicates a Munich build rather then a N indicating a South African build... so it seems that some 328i's were made in Germany at some stage. Is this still the case I wonder?

The first few batches were made in Germany until the Rosslyn plant came up... I believe all cars bound for Aus are made in Rosslyn now...
