BMW has been in the game for almost two decades with MINI though. They just seem to get worse every generation, which doesn't bode well for the 2GC.
The M2 is a great (but heavy) car, but like you, the current configuration doesn't work for my needs. I hold no hope of BMW building good fwd based cars though.
