Furthermore, they explained that if any metal part touched the rim, such as a pry bar, it would make the bend inward, not outward as shown. I guess I believe them, what I can't believe is that I hit a pothole and not know I even did it.

You could of told us you were there watching the install. Maybe the rims were damaged before he took them out the boxes.
