if you're in manual mode, you see you current gear in the Combi "M4" for example but this quickly goes away and is replaced by recommended gear like "4>5" and the numbers turn small.
If you want it to only show current gear go to bimmercode:
Instrument cluster / Expert mode / SPA_KOMBISELECT_DISABLE
Change this from "active" to nicht active"
