The tailights are fine in my opinion. Anything new and innovative will take time for some people to accept. GM uses focus groups and opinion polls to design cars and their cars look like sh1t. Leadership has rewards and risks. It has been BMW's pattern to stay the course. The e90 is very conservative in its design. Some, including me, believe that it is too dumbed down in comparison to the rest of the BMW family. Personally I think that sales will be huge because of the car's great value and cabin size.
