What does MSP/A mean (Google was no help)? In any case, clearly it is not a term that is in opposition to XAF-XJ, or this snippet you referenced from page 60 of the tech guide:

would be nonsense.

Isn't this just BMW moving away from the "SAF-XJ" terminology to their own more generic "MSP/A" terminology since they are no longer partnered with Castrol?

Whether they've actually completed the transition away from the Castrol differential fluid entirely would be a separate matter, but I have to believe that when they do (or if they have already) the new replacement (a Shell product, no doubt) will be a quality oil that lubricates the differential just as effectively as the old one.
