Re stereo: Some time ago we purchased a Mini Cooper S and a 325i at the same time. Got the better stereo on the Mini. Got financial cold feet and budgeted it out on the 325i (somehow made sense at the time). The difference was dramatic and we really missed it on the 325i. Since then we ordered the upgraded stereo on another 325i, 2 330i's, and now on our ordered X3 3.5.
That doesn't really speak to the difference between the stereos in the new X3, but that's how we got to ordering ours with the upgraded version. Also considered the low impact of $850 over the life of the car and 2-3 hours in the vehicle a day.
