Bluetooth remains on on the phone unit until you turn it off. If you have the iDrive you will get a small antenna icon whenever the phone and car are 'talkeing' to each other.
I get about a day and a half of battery life when I don't use the car and the bluetooth is still on. I also have the cradle in the armrest that charges the phone when I'm driving; one of the main reasons I paid for the cradle and adapter. Besides, I hate cords snaking everywhere in the car.
