I have a tad over 4000 miles on the car and the interval is still set at 15000 from PDI, so to account for rounding errors I'm at least at 18000 before oil change needed, although I'll surely hit the 1 year anniversary way before. OBTW, in addition to the countdown timer, there is also a suggested date of 8/2007 I believe based on what the BC knows of my driving habits.

As a follow up: I am at 3600mi and the interval now says 15000mi (went from 16000 to 15000 at 3500mi mark) My suggested date 7/2007. But as you said, I will also hit the one year anniversary "free" oil change long before 18000mi (only 7 months away). I also changed oil and filter at 1500mi (the old BMW recommended break-in oil service interval)
