There has never been an M hatchback. There has been two generations of M models of it’s coupe brother though, and neither used anything close to an all-new engine. In fact, they didn’t even use an M engine at all until the latest Competition model, and that engine was borrowed straight from the M3.

Obviously M products from eras gone by had unique engines, but that ship sailed long ago.

If BMW could spare the money right now to bring a proper 1M, M2 GC, X1/X2 M, to market to answer the RS3 Sportback, RS3 Sedan, Q3 RS, A45, CLA45, and GLA45 they would not hesitate to do so.

As they’ve no doubt tested a 600hp I6 and 800hp V8 as well, neither of which is likely to see duty in a production vehicle.
