Had this fail a few times too. A reset fixed it each time.

What I've done is add the drive recorder widget to the home screen on iDrive. If it displays not available, a reset is required. That way I can tell if it's broken when starting the car.

Not a great solution at all but hopefully will be fixed in a later software version.

Have you emailed connected drive to tell them?
