The RWD G42 2 Series coupe and G43 2 Series convertible will debut in late 2021. Those models will take us through 2028. After that, who knows. A lot can change in ten years. Some type of dedicated electrified (if not necessarily pure-electric only) platform is possible. It remains to be seen just how popular FWD vehicles will continue to be as we slowly move away from the ICE. Theoretically, a RWD EV is no more costly to manufacture than a FWD EV. It could even be less expensive because there is no cross talk between the drivetrain and steering. And with the driveshaft gone, there is no more packaging compromise. The i3 is rear-motor, RWD, and that type of packaging could become popular once the ICE is no longer in the picture.
