I'd be super happy if X3M/X4M would use detuned variation of S58 or even S55, none of that funky non real M engine ala the one in the current M2
But the landscape is changing, and quite rapidly it seems. The SUV/SAV segment is growing at rates beyond which were imagined 10 years ago, and elite Mnfrs which previously disdained the idea of producing one are jumping on board. And why not? To produce a high-performance vehicle which allows more utility than perf-only vehicles, and then add luxury on to that - this is what their customer base is telling them they want.

The old way of thinking about positioning a(n) SAV has gone out the window, and they recognize what this genre brings in positive cash flow to their firms, and per most analyses, this model group will insure profitability for firms who may have been scraping by with perf-only coupes/sedans. Which will allow them even more R&D funds.

Definitely an interesting time to see how this plays out.
