Demo cars come in at least two flavors: those registered to BMW NA, and those registered to the dealers. The former are numerous, and could have been BMW press cars (massive abuse potential), or BMW NA exec freebies (probably well taken care of).

Dealer registered cars could have been loaners cars (highly unlikely for an M3!), or toy cars for the owner and his family (rare).

How many miles on the car?
What entity is the previous DMV registered owner?
