Is there conventional wisdom about which size works best? I live in New England (winters, potholes, etc) and it's my daily driver. Performance is important but not the only thing. What do most folks go with (or what did they go with originally?)
Also, I assume tire profile will have to be lower to keep the same total diameter. Is there a resource that will help me with the tire sizes required if I go to 18, 19, or 20"?

If you are worried about potholes and not looking to lower your car, I think going with 18" or maybe 19" would be fine.
OEM tire sizes are 245/45/18 or 245/40/19.
