No need to extend wires if you buy the pre made wiring kit (I got these ones:

It does require some coding though once you have attached the wires. The outside lights are just remove & unplug, plug and re-install. It is the ones on the tailgate that require to thread the extra two wires into the passenger side trunk to connect.
