Responding to my own question, I installed the final version of the 8.8" touchscreen (BMW part no. 8709339) and it works perfectly. No phantom touch issues, even in direct sunlight.
While I'm on the subject I would like to recommend this glass screen protector. It works exactly like the Belkin glass protectors do for iPhones. The quality is extremely impressive, especially for the price, and the installation instructions are clear and very thoughtful. I highly recommend it for anyone with a touchscreen who has OCD about fingerprints on the screen and the like. The only potential negative with the protector is that it has a glare if hit with direct sunlight, as would happen in a convertible when the sun is directly behind the car.
