I read somewhere that you can jury rig the locking mechanism to unlock it. It's not a sophisticated mechanism. I've never tried either.

That was my assumption as well.
You, however, answered the crux of my dilemma - yes, I need to get those end caps open in order to uninstall the rack pieces. Thanks!
