Pops and Bangs are Back!? [LCI]
Received my LCI m340i this week, (previous was a MHT pre-LCI).
Previous car, as expected was neutered, quiet exhuast and minimal overrun in sport mode. However, my new one is night and day louder! And it's beautiful. Can make it bang at will, while driving or stationary on the drive. I know it can't be the case, but sounds like there is no OPF. Anyone else with an LCI noticed this ? |

Totally agree Ramparts, collected mine a couple of weeks ago and happy with the overun Pops/Bangs, I thought it would be more muted. Downside is my petrol consumption has gone to pop as driving everywhere in sport plus, with 99Ron until the novelty wears off.
Still not as loud as my previous F32 440i with the mppsk, that was totally Antisocial

Yes I agree also. I had the pre-LCI, non-hybrid M340i for 3 years and the noise was just about right for me - not antisocial but if I started it in Sport mode with a hot engine it would explode into life, which was quite amusing on the filling station forecourt.
I was expecting the new LCI version to be more muted but not at all - it does indeed seem to make more noise than the old one. Love it ! |

I'm talking about the actual exhaust, with my comments on being stood next to the rear of the car while someone else presses the accerlator, and someone else doing a drive by.

One of the things I love about my 330e is that it drives away from home silently without disturbing the neighbours. I guess we’re all a bit different.

Congrats, OP. Glad to hear (no pun intended) that the nannyish noise regs that came in with Euro 6 haven't taken the soul from this latest iteration of the 40i. Since we're moving rapidly toward a future governed by electro-evangelism, this latest counterpoint to the utterly generic is something to be savoured. Bravo BMW. How did they get away with it? (They must have tweaked the ECU to adjust the ignition timing—nice!) At the very least, they evidently have taken on board the feedback, since the introduction of the quietened MHT version, seriously...

My 2023 m340 doesn’t do any burbles or pops from exhaust, all of that sounds are coming from speakers. My previous 2020 m340 had real pops from exhaust.
Can’t say it bothers me, as those fake pops from speakers sound extremely realistic |

My '21 MHT does make "some" burbles from the exhaust - definitely not to the level of earlier cars though, and not really that audible with the windows up anyway.
From youtube videos etc im convinced the LCI (and possibly pre LCI MHT) have a different fake-noise to the early models. eg on the carwow and joe achillies videos the LCIs have a definite "bwub" on gearshift when launching them - which doesnt seem to be present on the early cars. (this noise IS present on my pre-lci MHT model) When researching - before i bought mine, i was convinced that turning off the ASD would be one of the first things i did, because i though it sounded really fake in all the youtube vids - in reality it doesn't bother me at all. Obviously doesn't sound anywhere near as tuneful as my old 5pot Volvo T5 - or even the old F30 340i - but thats a sign of the times i guess.. |

Then I got my LCI M340i, and for the first time I had the option to turn off the "iconic sounds". I got down on my hands and knees and checked the tailpipes, and I can confirm that when you turn on the iconic sounds, the flap on the RH pipe is immediately opened, and vice versa. So the iconic sounds switch does actually affect what it sounds like outside (in addition to amplifying or muting the sounds inside). Which leads me to another, new question ... quite apart from the nice sound effects, which is better for motoring efficiency (performance and economy) - flap open or flap closed ? I suspect the former. |

The reason is, the F36 wasn't designed for OPF and they had to fit one mid cycle. So wasn't designed correctly and basically just a bolt on The new G series car was designed with OPF from the start so will be louder |
