Why has BMW navigation lost the plot ?

BMW navigation software has lost the plot (or perhaps it's me ?).

With iDrive 7 on my last car I actually thought it was pretty good. Under iDrive 8 it is an absolute joke. Repeatedly, time and time again, it plots nonsensical routes. I mean, REALLY nonsensical. For example, see the image attached - I wanted to get from A to B. I live within 2 miles of "B", I have travelled this route many hundreds of times over several decades. The route in green is the obvious, commonsense, easiest, most direct and fastest route. The car tried to send me the red route, which is madness. At one point it even CROSSES the green route. I ignored it and when it finally accepted my choices the ETA reduced by 7 minutes.

What is going on? I used to have the choice of fastest, shortest or eco. I can't find that now. Whatever happened to AI ?

And before you ask, yes, I am on the latest maps 2023-4, makes no difference.

I *always* ask for alternative routes (I have a button programmed for it - with ID8 you won't have that luxury), and pick the one that looks best.

...and here's me and several others on here with ID 7 complaining about problems with downloading 2023-4 map update!
I'm really pleased I've still got ID 7.

Hi B6WAF a bit of a shot in the dark but you never know...

I live not too far away from you and when the Bradford clean air zone came into force I started getting crazy routes as the option to avoid toll roads was checked in settings (even though the car is exempt). When I unchecked that box the problem seemed to correct itself.

Is the map provider different? Wondering as a different company may have different data about the roads, speed limits

I think the map data may be a contender along with the obvious route selection criteria options as the other possibility
Also traffic , is that an issue ? I don’t have id8 but assume traffic is marked on the roads like in id7?

Possibly since at least 2014? - https://www.here.com/about/press-rel...n/2014-02-10-0

Dug a bit more and found this quote on https://www.here.com/about/press-releases/en/2015-05-01
"We provided the first map for BMW GPS navigation systems in 1994" but it must have been Navteq at that time

That's interesting to know. The reason I asked was previous map updates seem to have been fine even up to 2023-3 so that tends to suggest that something has gone belly up with this map release.
